VIQUA systems and well water

Can you use UV-disinfection to treat your water if you draw water from a well? Yes. In fact, you SHOULD use UV-disinfection to treat the water from any microbiological contamination which unfortunately is very common with well water. Let us take a look at the most common water issues that affects these types of water supplies.

  • Hard water
  • Turbidity: cloudy, visually unappealing water
  • Iron and iron bacteria: bad taste, staining, and possible gelatinous growth
  • Sulphur: “rotten egg” odor associated with sulphur reducing bacteria
  • Microbial contamination: including fecal coliforms, E.coli and parasitic cysts

However, depending on where you live in Thailand, you might have other water issues that needs treatment as well. These includes chemical contamination that comes from fertilizer runoffs and pesticides uses in farming and in some cases also heavy metal contaminations such as lead.

Can a UV-system treat all of these issues? The answer is no. UV-treatment is very effective against microbiological contamination and is meant to be used in combination with other types of water treatment such as different types of filtration. For many of our customers using well water, a water softener together with a VIQUA Whole Home System which includes sediment and carbon filtration before the UV-chamber is enough to get perfectly safe drinking water from all the taps in their home. However, for some customers dealing with iron contamination or heavy metals, this is not enough and other types of treatment needs to be added before the VIQUA system. Some customers choose to design their own treatment system and then add a VIQUA stand-alone UV-system as a final step to kill virus and bacteria before the water reaches the tap.

A customer on Phuket with well water has designed his own treatment system and installed a VIQUA system as the final step in the treatment process.

In cases where you are not sure about your well water quality, we always recommend you to perform a water test. The result from this test can help you determine if a VIQUA system with pre-filtration and UV-disinfection is enough or if any additional treatment is needed. Whatever the case might be, a VIQUA UV-system can be installed as the last step in the water treatment chain and will effectively treat any microbiological contamination and give you water without any virus and bacteria.
